Readme file for Import NED DEM Wizard (v. 1.5) This file contains information on using and installing the Import USGS NED DEM Wizard. This software is provided "as is" free of charge and no warranties are made as to its utility for any specific purpose. Please read this before using the wizard. This wizard will import a single NED DEM file in either 'Generic Binary' or 'Grid-Float' format (not ArcGrid format). You have two options for import: - Import the NED data file to a new ER Mapper Raster Dataset - Create an ERS header file for the NED data file to directly use the NED .bil data file in ER Mapper Simply creating an ERS header is more efficient because it does not make second copy of the data file. If your data resides on a CD-ROM, you must use the Import file option. After import or header creation, the DEM data is displayed as a colordrape image. All metadata is transferred automatically from the NED files to the ER Mapper dataset or header, so the dataset is fully georeferenced when the wizard finishes. The NED data is always delivered in the NAD83 datum and Lat Long (GEODETIC) map projection. This means the 30-meter cell (pixel) size will be encoded in decimal degrees, not meters. New to version 1.2: Now handles BIL files with Intel (LSB) byte order. New to version 1.3: Now handles 8-bit BIL files. New to version 1.4: Now handles ".flt" Grid-Float files. New to version 1.5 - Now check PRJ file for NAD83 or NAD27 datum (NAD27 in Alaska) --------------------------------------------------- Installation Instructions: --------------------------------------------------- Follow these instructions to install the wizard on the Windows 2000/NT/XP PC platform. 1) Close all ER Mapper applications. 2) Download the file "ned_import_wizard_15.zip" into a temp directory on your hard drive. 3) Double-click on the .zip file in Windows Explorer. The WinZip dialog displays. (If you do not have WinZip installed, the WinZip evaluation dialog will appear. Click "I Agree" or "Use Evaluation Version" to continue.) 4) Click the Extract button. Under 'Folders/drives,' navigate to the directory location of ER Mapper on your system. (This will typically be a directory named ERMAPPER64 or similar). The 'Extract to' field on the left should now show that location (i.e. C:\ERMAPPER64). Be sure the "All files," "Overwrite existing files" and "Use folder names" options are selected. Then click the "Extract" button. 5) Close WinZip when finished. 6) Restart ER Mapper, then select Toolbars->NED Import Wizard. Click the "NED" button to start the wizard For comments, questions or bugs, contact: Eric Augenstein Earthstar Geographics eric@es-geo.com
