Readme file for ESG_Convert_to_Class_Dataset.erb wizard This file contains information on using and installing the ESG_Convert_to_Class_Dataset wizard. This software is provided "as is" free of charge and no warranties are made as to its utility for any specific purpose. Please read this before using the wizard. This wizard converts a single band, 8-bit ER Mapper dataset into what ER Mapper considers to be a 'classified' image. This lets you treat a classified image created in another product as a classified image in ER Mapper. After conversion, you can: - choose class colors and names - create a classification legend in map composition - easily assign specific colors to specific pixel values The wizard assigns a default greyscale color set to the 'classified' image and names each class "Class 1," "Class 2," etc. You can select Edit/Class Region Color and Name to change the class colors and names as desired. The wizard creates a new 'classification' version of the ERS header file (it does not write a new data file). The original ERS file is copied to a backup (.bak) so you can revert to it if desired. Note: Statistics can only be calculated for class pixel counts (non-null cells) and areas. Since there is no 'source' multispectral dataset, those statistics cannot be calculated (unlike a classification created with ER Mapper). In addition, the "Auto-gen Colors" option will not work as expected to generate a color scheme since it also requires a source multispectral dataset to work correctly. Known problems/limitations: The wizard will fail when your input ER Mapper dataset has non-standard indentation or spacing for lines in the ERS header file. This sometimes happens when the header was created outside ER Mapper. You can circumvent this by re-importing the dataset into ER Mapper using Utilities/Import ASCII and Binary/ Binary BIL. This will create a new dataset and header with standard line indentation and spacing that the wizard will read OK. (You must also re-enter the georeferencing information.) --------------------------------------------------- Installation Instructions (PC and UNIX installs): --------------------------------------------------- Follow these instructions to install the wizard on the Windows 95/98/NT PC platform. 1) Close all ER Mapper applications. 2) Copy the file "cvt_class_wiz.exe" into a temporary directory on your hard drive. 3) Double-click on the .exe file in Windows Explorer. The WinZip Self Extractor dialog displays. 4) In the "Unzip to folder" field, enter the directory location of ER Mapper on your system (make sure the drive letter is correct, for example C: or D:), then click "Unzip" to install the wizard files into the appropriate ER Mapper directories. 5) Click Close on the WinZip Self Extractor dialog when finished. 6) Restart ER Mapper, then select View/Batch Engine Script Control. Click Run Script, then double-click on the file "ESG_Convert_to_Class_Dataset.erb" to run the wizard. --------------------------------------------------- Follow these instructions to install the wizard on the UNIX Sun Solaris or SGI IRIX platforms. 1) Close all ER Mapper applications. (Check the license status via the Utilities menu for remote users.) 2) Open a terminal window. 3) Copy the file "cvt_class_wiz.tar" into a temporary directory on your hard drive (e.g., /usr/temp/). 4) Change to the ER Mapper install directory (e.g., cd /usr/ermapper/). 5) Issue the following command to install the wizard files: tar xvf cvt_class_wiz.tar where "tempdir" is the directory where the temporary directory from step 3 where the cvt_class_wiz.tar file resides. 6) Restart ER Mapper, then select View/Batch Engine Script Control. Click Run Script, then double-click on the file "ESG_Convert_to_Class_Dataset.erb" to run the wizard. For comments or questions, contact: Eric Augenstein Earthstar Geographics eric@es-geo.com
